It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE 16

Seems like house's booming around da world with a lot of shits not to be missed these coming daze. If the infamous Memorial Day Week-End is still in the memories of those who were luckyy enuff 2 B in Detroit (remember DEMF - The Movement last end of may), the countdown for Independance Day celebrations (07/04) has just begun in NYC where the Clubshelter posse has scheduled another one of these big thangz on offer. So whatizit ? Well, no less than a 22 hours dance marathon on 2 different floors, right after a Chaka Khan's PA @ SummerStage in Central Park, starting from Sat 07/05, 07:00 PM to Sunday 07/06, 05:00 PM, starring resident DJ Timmy Regisford, 'Little' Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Danny Krivit, Phil Asher, DJ Spinna, Frankie Feliciano, Jazzy Jeff and Glenn Underground to name but a few, while house mother Lady 'Whistlin'' Bird will provide provide complimentary BBQ, breakfast and brunch + a raffle for 8 all paid accommodations at Jamaica's Super Clubs Resorts (PS : Airfare not included !). Another week after and we'll be on the sunny shores of the french Riviera. If not exactly the most touristic area, as compared to St-Tropez, Cannes or Nice, at least at the place where the other thing is gonna happen dis summer. Strange to see this occuring in France and more particularly in a city - Toulon, obviously more known as being the hometown of the french navy ! Have to say that I can't help admiring these people who've had the guts 2 organize dis in a country where this music has so much to do for being recognized as compared to some more electro technosih based stuff.

Another two weeks and some of the most respected people of our community will be there, ready to rock the floor and share the vibes for our ears (and eyes) only. Blaze, for the very first time live In France, Jerome Sydenham, JoVonn, DJ Deep + Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer and… myself who was already there last year. Not to mention Derrick May for the final evening this year. All of these surrounded by a legion of local talents, from Sunslice A&R DJ Bool and his group (Jerk House Connection) to Pascal Rioux (Rotax Records), The Offsetters, Kardek who's produced tracks with Hanna Haﳬ DJ Titou (who'll open the festivites for Kevin & Josh) or Lil'F (doin' the same for Derrick). No doubt,  Toulon is definitely the place where, ya'll folks will have 2 B from 07/10 to 07/14 (more infos : www.sunslice-festival.com).

Hear this ? Cool, but for now, as promised as done… time to welcome Nik Weston 's first editorial contribution on IDM as it's nutin' but what you've ever wanted to know about Japan. Back at'cha next week. And, last but not least, let's welcome upskirtrecords.com, Scotland's trinitysoul.com and Helsinki's deeprhtyms.com inside the IDM websites network.

Peace, MFSB

JAPAN CORNER by NIK WESTON
Ahhhhhh… As the spring sakura blossom dimishes and the harsh onset of the overpowering japanese summer takes hold every man, woman and child heads for the comfort of the shopping malls and the obvious benefits of air con. Japan is built on many geographical fault lines so earthquakes are regular occurance as anyone who has lived here for any time will tell you but as clubland hosts up to compete with the weather, theres some explosive DJ's coming here to tour. Just make sure you bring your portable fan if you go out clubbing.

Regulars like Herman still frequent to play the Renaissance event at Womb but there's plenty of first timers like Swayzak and Red Jerry in town lately who have been spinning here last summer. A Guy Called Gerald did a national tour as did USA main men Kenny Dope and Kenny Larkin and there have been visits from John Tejada, Danny Rampling who played in july and Asad Rizvi who played at Maniac Love. There was a huge Wire 03 event with tickets costing 10,000 yen (blimey...that transaltes to around 60 quid guv..) featuring home grown live & DJ talent alongside Luke Slater, Westbam, Jay Denham and Ken Ishii. The latest incidently has a UK single "Awakenings'" dropping round about er........ now remixed by Jimpster and Smith & Selway. On a drum & bass tip, DJ Zinc, Zed Bias, DJ Die and Krust have all played at Liquid recently. Die's sets are particularly fierce but the kids seem to love it and go crazy ! And let's face it..... if you're going to Japan to hear D&B, then there simply is No better venue ! Gotan Project who've been living out of suitcases and hotels for the past year and who's last album sold hundreds of thousands worldwide were playing at La Fabrique in Tokyo as part of an ongoing Global Tour.

United Future Organisation who are currently remixing Charles Webster (for what Yabe from the now twosome UFO described as a 'deep houser') have also a new 2 sided UK single in a drum & bass/broken beat style with "Suite Espagnole". The member of UFO who left - Toshio Matsuura - has recently remixed James Brown for a japanese only remix compilation and this remix, "Give It Up & Turn It Loose'', which was exchanging 30 pounds or so in London for the highly sought after 12" has just turned up on the Gilles Peterson, Worldwide 3 compilation for Talkin'Loud. Everyone in Japan seems to be in general having a tough (what with the ecomony) time of it all but there are still records that sell bucket loads. A ska group, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, sold 750,000 copies of their last album and an imported bootleg 12'' from Sweden that blew up in London, ''Follow Me", by Red Astair (using D'Angelo's vocal) did a very respectable 2,000 units in one store (yes....one store !!! )

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE≠15

The future is the property of those wakin'up early ! In other words, what gives the impression of fluency is not only the sign of talent but, above everything, the result of true hard work, whoever you are, whatever you do. And this is exactly where we're at today… Thinking, conceiving, realizing then producing is nothing but one half of the job ; the second one, at least as important, being to achieve connecting people ! A lot has still to be done and we work hard on it here at IDM HQ, gathering nu enrgies around dis project day after day. But one thing is for sure. The more we give, the more we'll get… This week's issue is the opportunity to go back with Irie, for the international version of the Nu Groove Column that he writes for french mag, Coda. This preceeding the awaited debut on our editorial team of London DJ/promoter, Nik Weston, next week. As for new websites associated with IDM, let's officially welcome beatsounds.com from the home of techno (Detroit) and italian's fave houseconnection.net out of Milano. Not to mention codamag.com the internet counterpart of Coda Magazine where In Da Mix originally appeared (on its french version) some seven years ago !

NU GROOVE (SOUL, JAZZ, BREAKS, DRUM & BASS + MORE)
Beyond modes and codes, real artists keep on standing time after time on the Parisian frontline. Let's start this month's issue with I:Cube with a very captivating third long player, right after the nasty “Vacuum Jacker” EP released earlier on this year. A rare record, a mystic journey with fascinating and confusing moods. A kinda remoinder of the great hours of Carl Craig, Orbital, Plaid or Maurizio. While, on second step of the podium, stands the ever facetious Pepe Bradock comin'out of da woods with some mo' exceptional nu tracks on his own imprint (Atavisme) ; this, after an angular take on Cesaria Evora's "Angola", this with a rather fat Carl Craig mix on the flip (Lusafrica/BMG). Third surprise being the signature of the joyful man from Strasbourg, Joyce aka Steppah Huntah on Compost - after a first offering on his mates nu label, Soultronik Records - with the bitter and sweet "Walk This Step" remixed by the man of the moment, Bugz In the Attic's very own Seiji.

Without a doubt, the most burning flames heating up Paname's macadam right now are Shade Of Soul and Franck Roger. The latter one who apart from hot 12" on Straight Up and BRS (Cf. In Da Mix 14), gives us (with the help of Chris Wonder) a pearl of sensual house with a sweet R&B flavour on it named "If I", remixed in a deep broken fashion by none other than Shade Of Soul themselves (Sunny Side). Hold tight for this one ! Plus, can't wait for the massive "Mascarade"'s release in september, this being the fruit of a nu collaboration between Mister R et Versatile Records maestro, Gilb R. Also emulating from Paris is Ismaa Records, a label that champions updatings of creole vibes with a lot to come for the sunny daze. Incl. are tunes & remlxes from Kemit Sources (a french house duo rooted in the West Indies, revealed on Versatile a few months back) and also Osunlade (with a very catchy remix of Roland Brival's lovely "Kitayo" ), Fourtet and soon King Britt.

From Paris to Parrish, are just a few letters that lead us to Detroit groove maker Theo P with a lot to be said about these days. First reason being the release of his new masterpiece, "Illumination" under the (strange) name of Rusty Waters on Sound Signature. The second being this 3 Chairs'12" on which he has worked on with Kenny Dixon Jr and srs Rick Wilhite and Pittman before a forthcoming album the label of the same name. These four guys being some of the very few soldiers devoted to what stands as Motown's future soul and fighting against the inertia of the record industry. Also a well swell rebel is California hip hop don DJ Rells aka Madlib. A guy almost everywhere, from his new venture with Jaydee, under the Jaylib name with a debut-LP soon to be released, to the gorgeous Shades Of Blue where he revamps the prestigious Blue Note Records repertoire. Finest moments being Donald Byrd's "Steppin Into Tomorrow" (originally produced by the mystifying Mizell Brothers) and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints… Or how to relift classics with sheer class, without spoiling'em like US3 did in the past !

This leading us to some old school hip hop vibes as the final part of this section. Coz' if some artists tend to do the same stuff over and over for more than ten years, at least they do it great. Should it be DJ Premier's productions for Gangstarr, the mythical De La Soul, The Roots, Common or even Little Brother who remind us the Golden Era when the Natives Tongues came along. Speaking of which we all can't wait for what stands as one of the major events of this year : the A Tribe Called Quest reformation. Wishin' that they'll come back  with the goods as opposed to the slightly disappointing return of Pete Rock & CL Smooth. IRIE

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE≠14

So we've gone directly from issue ≠ 12 to 14 for reasons that some of you will understand and appreciate. Summer's knocking at the door and it looks like we already have a part of its OST with a whole bunch of goodies on offer. On top of it, you'll be a bit more to stay tuned to it as some new websites enter the IDM family. And, last but not least, make yourself ready to receive some x-tra infos as london promoter/DJ, Nik Weston is to soon to broaden our editorial spectrum while delivering us the ultimate flavas out of the japanese scene.

Another 30 days to come before what already looks like Europe's supreme rendez-vous in terms of house music with the second edtition of Toulon's Sunslice festival (www.sunslice-festival.com). Yes folks, get ready for some serious dancefloor devastation as a full array of heavyweight champions will be there nite after nite, starting with JoVonn and your very devoted (07/10), Jerome Sydenham & Dennis Ferrer (07/11), Blaze (07/12), Kerri Chandler & DJ Deep (07/13) and DEMF-The Movement co host, Derrick May (07/14). Not to mention the contributions of some local talents (more infos to come on our forthcoming issues) shoud it be for some befores around da pool at l'H? de la Tour Blanche or for some afterparties at le Bar ?Thym…

Vinylwise, let's start with some solid groove, as we had some at The Movement in Detroit during the Memorial Day week-end. No doubt, Amp Fiddler's PA at the High-Tech Soul stage was one of the hilites of dis fes and his latest "Love & War EP" on UK label Genuine is a brilliant demonstration of what he looks to become on the soul funk era. Also worth to check out on the same vein is Amp Dog Knight's "I'm Doing Fine" on Mahogani as well as "All Over"/3 Chairs Theme" from sirs Parrish, Dixon, Pittman et Wilhite, although on a more abstract & abstract tip (3 Chairs). Not mentioning the ultratmospheric Norman Talley's "Change" remixed by Mike Huckaby, one of our last Miami WMC's favourite choons, due to be hit the streets next month on Third Ear.

On a slower vibe, Donnie's "Cloud Nine" gets a circumstancial treatment from DJ Spinna and stands as the ideal audio environment for starting a summer romance (Giant Step/Motown). And the cool is also there on hip hopperz, North West Metropolis "Expression EP" on dutch Rush Hour's distributed label, Unexpected Records, as particularly shown on "Self Reflection" and "Inside Out". This leading us to the much awaited reformation of A Tribe Called Quest with an "After Hours" featuring Monique Bingham and produced by Sir Piers. Could this be the starting point to some hip house revival ? We shall see (Curious).

One time Basement Boys collaborator, Maurice Fulton's versatilty shouldn't be longer a secret for everyone. Well the Ladyvipb man shows us another trick of his with the funky retro-phuturist "Don't You See" featuring Bibi (not the french guy !) on Modal Records. While Joe Clausell's Instant House project gets an afrolectro relifting on "Awade" by da man himself on Natural Resources.

Slighty different but this is not surprising, is the collaboration between the aforementioned and Jephte Guillaume on "Koloko", a superb slice of afro-brazilian atmospherism (JDT). After Francoiss K and, more recently, Carl Craig and Pepe Bradock, Cabo Verde diva, Cesaria Evora sees her "Nu Tridhna" brilliantly revamped by Kerri Chandler (Lusafrica/BMG). While Epilogy vol.1's mastertrack is the deep'n'soulful "Never Letting Go" by Friends Of Ibadan, aka T-Kolai (Sahara). Antonio Ocasio seeing his "Organic Energy" getting the 12" format on Kenlou Records, after a first appearance on the MAW Records' 4-seven inches box-set. And, not to be missed, by all means necessary is Romatt's newie, "Newborn Bay" featuring Nedelka on some hypnotic groove. Definitely one of the cutz of dis summer (Earth Project).

Vocally speaking, let's mention this collaboration around japanese outfit ageHa, seing two of the most respected divas - Jocelyn Brown and Loleatta Holloway - singing together on "A Better World" with remixes by Blaze on King Street while the two guys look like havin' another monster track called "We Are One" to be released on the same label. Two other big talents -Ann Nesby and the Revd Al Green - bringing us the one-sided "Put It On Paper" remixed by Spen & Karizma (white). Benji Candelario getting wonderfully back on the blocks with the timeless "You Let Your Love Slip Away" and some nu silky contribution from Arnold Jarvis (King Street).

On this (french) side of the Pond, Yellow Production has a new concept called Artofdisco. The first step being the classy funk "Strength" by Carolyn Harding produced by Freeform Five. Meanwhile the label releases the vinyl version of Africanism vol.2 under the form of an 8 twelve inches box-set ! Much has been recently said on this column about the big return of Franck Roger with tons of newies to be released on various labels like Versatile, Needs Music or Dino & Terry's label. Well, this talented guy begins this serie with two simultaneous releases. The first one, "Love Symphony" under his Sun Orchestra moniker (with Jerome Batistelli) with remixes by Needs (Straight Up). The second one ("Liquid") one his own name, seing him in these shooting territories "alla" Ron Trent (BRS). Thus finishing with some other good music for the debut of Southern France, The Soulguardians (including IDM partner, DJ ADN with www.movin-records.com) and an EP, "In A Deeper Motion" to be released on their own label (Move On Records) in September. Watch dis space !

Peace,

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE≠12

As promised as done, with this issue 12 of IDM coming with a few lines about what is now to stand as the major american event in terms of electronic music. Well, you've guessed it : The Detroit Electronic Music Festival now better known under The Movement name…

Ya'all know how I love NY, but Detroit to me is anotha thang ! Not only because I've found there people who've welcomed me as one of theirs (i.e. "uncle" Sundiata OM, Norman Talley, Mike 'Agent X' Clark, Malik Alston, Kevin Saunderson , Alton Miller, Scott Grooves and cohorts), but also because of its unique spirit. What I would describe as a genuine DIY soul, should it be talkin' about the groove with people like Dwele, Slum Village or Amp Fiddler, but also in this more progressive form that gave birth to techno, around the ones I would call its magnificient seven : Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Moodymann. Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. And it's no surprising to notice that the three latest were to recapture the lead (and the original spirit) of the event this year back from the people who've sacked its originator (Carl Craig) two years ago.

Before goin' any further, me, as a european observer, would like to notice how surprised I've ever felt so far in seing the main US local scenes (NY, Detroit, Chicago), its heroes and fans appearently quite separated from each other so far ; this being quite noticable in Miami during the Winter Music Conference. Well, it looks like Srs May, Atkins and Saunderson have taken notice of  that same thing, inviting not only their chicagoan neighbors (Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Ron Trent et al), but also NYC heavyweight actors including Todd Terry, Francois K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit, not mentionning the contributions of Larry Heard (out of Memphis) or Atlanta's shining Kemeticjust. This contributing to give a better view of a US scene that desperately stays in the shadow compared to its hip hop/R&B and country/rock alter egos. Well, I guess this is nothing but a true illustration of what I would call The Politics of Dancing, in a country where segregation seems like always finding a tomorrow.

And needless to say that major companies's execs would have been once more well inspired to come, considering the growing volume of an attendance that has reached another peak this year. Also needless to say that it merely was impossible to witness everything properly as a lot of things happened at the same time during this Memorial Day WE, being at daytime as during nighttime with the many afterparties that were held at the four corners of the city. Although there was a space for almost everything… So, to name but a few, what is to remembered ? In terms of DJ sets, I would say Jeff Mills (sparkling), Juan Atkins (versatile), Norman Talley (festive), Ron Trent (mental as probably never so far) and Rolando (electrifying), while PA's wise, Amp Fiddler has prooved that he's definitely a(nother) name to watch on the soul vein. Not mentioning Peven Everett, or Rich Medina (behind the decks), altogether on the High Tech Soul stage. Well, all & all, a shining serie of various colorful postcards…

Wouldn't say the same thing though about the Movement Mechanics at the Detroit Contemporary where I was booked on Sunday, as it turned on a real nightmare. Not only in terms of line up with some more than agressive hardcore drum & bass shit at the beginning of the nite, but also facing sudden police raid that occured to close the venue, claiming its illegality, just before my set. Not to sure if we can call this the ransom of the glory, but at the end, nothing compared to the sense of brotherhood that has been shown to me here once more.

Detroit, I luv'ya !
Peace, MFSB

June 1, 2003

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX ISSUE≠11

Back from Detroit and to the regular form of In Da Mix as said earlier, with a full report about the Movement festival to be printed on next week's issue, as I've just landed in Paris this morning. Also new partner sites to broaden IDM's exposure are technotuner.fr, movinrecords.com and ghettotrax.com, looking set to join the network anytime now.

Good good stuff to be released soon on Plaza Records. For those of you who've never heard about this label, it is nothing else but the imprint of 70's funk legend, Randy Muller, a guy who's created a sound on his own, producing groups like Brass Construction, Skyy, Funk Deluxe, and Rafael Cameron amongst others with a full bunch of masterpieces including "Movin'", "First Time Around", "This Time" and "Funtown USA". Well, the good thing is that most of this unvaluable material is to resurface with the help of Kenny Dope behind the desks, beginning with Skyy's classic "Let's Celebrate" that he has notoriously played during his set at the MAW party in Miami.

No news so far about a release date for the enormous "Back 2 Chicago" by Roy Davis Jr on NiteGrooves, although we might reveal that this hudge tune is the result of a collaboration between the aforementionned and Detroit rising face, Malik Alston.

Also on the watch this space tip, check out one half of french duet Nutropic, Jazzamar's nu material awaited on Crammed Discs and some other labels, as it's pure dope in its most brilliant form. And, last but not least, some new Playin'4 The City stuff with the remixes of "Backshop EP" by Franck Roger and Llorca awaited any day now on Tropism, + a new 12" scheduled soon on chicagoan label Music 101 (remember where you've read it first !).

Our here & now section pushes us a bit deeper inside the Windy City with Glenn Underground, a true Chi-lite, should he be on his own as it's the case on Shelter with "Look Inside" (check out the Dub) or with some now usual collaborators of his like Abicah Soul (remember their previous work entitled "Chuckie's Turn" released both on Jellybean Soul and Rush Hour ?) ; these enlightning his subtle mix of afro funk driven patterns and thin keys as delivered on "Esta Hermosa Cancion" on Moods & Grooves. Not mentionning the addiction of some poetry featuring Cei-Bei on "Fall'en Rain" (Nite Life Collective).

Let's get down, not to Saturday night, although it definitely looks like an anthem, but to Baltimore where local heroes, Jasper Street Co deliver us the majestikal "Another Day" remixed by Jersey supremos Blaze. An absolute soulful craziness due to become a classic (Basement Boys Records). This leadin' us to former Blaze collaborator, Cassio Ware, with the various declinaisons of his newie called "'Happy Birthday Baby", including the that reminds somehow the previous works of the guys under the name of Funky People (Black House/Funky
Soul). Keepin' on this Jersey trip with the revamping of Kenny Bobien's classic, "Dance For Life", originally released on Soundmen On Wax two years ago. Well, as Barry White said to me one day : "As long as the shape is here, no matter what ! Good music stays good music". And it's definitely the case with this package including Kenny Carpenter's typically New York stylee mix and janaese Little Big Bee adding some latin flavas on it.

Following the footsteps of brilliant Inda Arie and Jahiem featuring Mary J Blige's 12", off-side label Fall out as two nu corkers. The first one being british female duet, Floetry with the jazz/funk sensuous "Say Yes". The other one being some Timmy Regisford's reworks of "You Made Me Love You" by Jamiroquai's singer, Jay Kay under the name of Lil' Jay, including a floorfiller dub version. Meanhile you may get some more remixed material from this famous british band under the form of their House Mixes Vol.1 album relased on their recently launched label (JMR Records). A collection including amongst others the Blaze 's Shelter Mix of "Little L", "Canned Heat" by Masters At Work, "Alright" by Todd Terry and "Space Cowboy" by David Morales.

You may already know how much we like to twist the vibez here as there's nuttin' more borring than listening to da same kinda shit for hours & hours… Well, this 3 Generations Walking's newie called "Midnight Bustling" gives us the opportunity to embrace some deep afro reggae/dub territories (most particularly the Groundation Version), as offered week by Francoiss K (although he's remixed the other side) during his recently launched Deep Space Monday nite sessions @ (Spiritual Life). Atmosphere, atmosphere even though much different leadin' us to some latin jazz era with a bit of melancholic chords alla Faze Action on "The Nature EP" from japanese producers, Katsuya Sano and Shin Ashimoto and more precisely "River Benue (The Just For Fun Dub") remixed by Srs Jerome Sydenham and Dennis Ferrer (Ibadan).

Dennis Ferrer does once again the do on a real soul funk trip, relifting "Can't Stop" for Reel People featuring Angela Johnson and this gives us another stomper (Papa Records). Anotha name definitely to watch out is T-Kolai as their music has always had something different (what we call a trademark). Non content to have recently created a pure piece of beauty on the downtempo field, prior to the release of their debut-LP on ChilliFunk, the guys keep on paving their way somewhere between Needs, Ron Trent, Joe Claussell and Glenn Underground with the afro funky "Kenji Kuan" over some plaintive tribal vocal riffs (Sahara). Meanwhile California beach boy Miguel Migs gives us the soulful "The Moving On" featuring vocalist Lagerald Norman over a cool'n'groovy midempo (Chez).

Time to embark on a short trip to Europe with the latest release on Bitches Brew. Although not an instant floorfiller, "Mistaken" has definitely more of a timeless song and more especially on the B-side's remix from Alix Alvarez. A classy deep house song from a production team that comprizes DJ Cosmo and Ben Mitchell joined by singer Billie Godfrey with whom the latest has worked with on the Mitchell & Dewbury album recently released on Mumo Records.

Anotha fruitful collaboration is this sweet & jazzy/soulful remix of "Set For Seizure" by Anthony Nicholson for Compost's new signee Daniel Magg, givin'it da reeal dimension. I somehow have to say that Tr?io's debut-LP was something of a disappointment, goin' a bit everywhere without a real lead apart from two to three songs. Well, we have at least one of'em : the groovy "Satsfaction" to save the disaster as "Jaleo" on the A-side gives you a pretty good preview of what this album is about !

Down to the South and we're In Italy, the country of respected Irma Records. Well these Rimini people have a new bomb on offer under the form of the brilliant "Chimes Of Freedom" seing some of the most unexpected collaboration between the Pasta Boys and Osunlade. This one leadin'us to a magnificient groove somehow reminiscent of some "ancient" work by Talking Headz.

Ending up this issue 11 with two french nu projects. The first being the fluid and soulful "You Know" by co-leader of Soldiers Of Twilight, Demon Ritchie under the guise of Herald featuring Gee (Serial Records). Mini Groove Orchestra takin' us to some festive destination with the houselectro' Oscar's Club Mix of "Pom Pop" around some vocal scats (Follow Me). A real happy end indeeeeeed ! Peace y'all ! MFSB
